The day of the launch of the new iPhone…

The release of the new phone celebrates the 10th anniversary of the device and is rumoured to be called the iPhone X.

The latest leaks about the new flagship device iPhone X

It is rumoured to include wireless charging, facial recognition and edge-to-edge display. With this in mind, it’s likely that the smartphone will no longer have the traditional home button.

It doesn’t stop there… Apple are planning to break tradition releasing the device alongside two other phones, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

When will it be released?

The iPhone is expected to be unveiled TODAY, September 12th at the new Apple Park headquarters at 6pm UK time.

Meaning the iPhone 8 should be available for pre-order from September 15, with the expected date for it to hit outlets would be Friday September 22.

How much will it cost?

It comes at no surprise to many that the new iPhone X is rumoured to be Apple’s most expensive handset yet, with estimates suggesting it could cost around £1,000.

Worry not, with the reports of the 8 and 8 Plus models being released at the same time. It is likely that they will be more readily available for mass consumer purchase. These are rumoured to be closer to the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus prices which are around £600 and £750.

How soon will it be available for purchase?

It’s safe to expect a limited supply of the new iPhone range for the first couple of months. Apple normally release a new design, then follow up a year later with a slight upgrade. Following this logic, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are anticipated to feature minor performance and feature upgrades to the iPhone 7.

What colours will be available?

The leaks suggest the premium iPhone X will come in at least three colours: Black, White and a Copper Gold.

What features will the iPhone X have?

Edge-To-Edge Display

Similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S8, the display is reported to stretch across almost the whole screen. With this in mind, it should have a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display. Apple could also replace the device’s aluminium back with a glass back and aluminium bumper.

Such a design would allow Apple to increase the screen size of the iPhone without increasing its actual footprint, meaning it could be closer in size to the iPhone 7 with a screen that matches the iPhone 7 Plus.

No Home Button!?

The home button has been a feature of every iPhone since the original in 2007, but Apple may be in a position to get rid of it. It has already introduced advanced pressure-detection technology with 3D Touch, and last year’s iPhone 7 had a solid-state home button that vibrates instead of clicks.

The iPhone screen now also wakes up when the phone is picked up, so there is less need to click a physical home button. Apple has patented a way of embedding Touch ID, its fingerprint reading technology in the screen, so that might solve security issues. The latest leaks from Apple’s firmware revealed a virtual home button, that could be resized or even hidden.

Facial Recognition Software

Apple could look to replace its Touch ID fingerprint scanner and home button with an infrared scanner that unlocks the phone using facial recognition software. The security upgrade is said to be exceptionally fast and able to scan the user’s face and unlock the device.

Similar facial recognition is currently available on rival phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The Camera

According to leaks, the iPhone X features dual rear-facing 12-megapixel sensors that can record up to 4K video at 60 frames per second (and 1080p clips at 240fps), as well as a selfie-cam is a 7MP that shoots at 1080p at 30fps. Additionally, the camera’s front-mounted IR camera, expected to be used for Face ID unlocking, is 1312 x 1104-pixels.
